What is a Writing Accountability Group?: Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs) meet for two hours, spending approximately 10-15 minutes at the start with each member sharing a) their writing progress over the past week, and b) their goal for the silent writing time. After a silent writing time of about 90-100 minutes, the group will again spend about 10-15 minutes to share the progress they made, and their writing goals for the next week until the group meets again. Accountability in these groups is encouraging, rather than punitive. No one is going to shame you for not reaching your goals for a particular week or day! Instead, they will encourage you, support you, and empathize with you.

Can I register for more than one group?
Yes. Research suggests that writing groups work best with about 4-8 people in attendance. A registration limited at 8-12 per group seems to work, for keeping the weekly attendance within this range. If more than 12 register for a day/time, an additional group and meeting location can be arranged.

Writing Accountability Group Facilitators: WAGs are self-governed. Each group will have a facilitator or co-facilitators. Facilitators simply take attendance and lead the sharing of progress and goals at the beginning and end of each writing session. Having a dedicated facilitator or co-facilitators is especially important at the beginning of the semester; after a few weeks, most participants are comfortable kicking off the sharing and taking attendance if facilitators are absent.

Research shows that writing group participants achieve the best outcomes when they attend at least 70% of group meetings (Skarupski, 2018).
